The main topic of my project is about ‘in between spaces’, inspired by the traditional spaces such as ‘stoop’, and ‘dae-cheong-ma-ru’, which is a semi-opened space not only to strengthen the private area but also connects the divided rooms at the same time. The development of the city in Seoul was focused on adapting the overflowing population. As a result, multi-unit housing called ‘apartment’ that accommodates houses to more than 100 dwellings was made with just few simple modules, which is not even adjustable by the users, making these houses feel a mere object that people ‘own’ rather than live in those houses. This ended up fortifying the whole area to protect themselves from others using and invading the area. I thought this phenomenon freezes the whole community, which makes a city dead. These spaces can start with a ‘space’, where people can gather, or just enjoy by one’s self. But, if these spaces connect to each other, it can be extended as a ‘hall’. Based on this algorithm, modules are composed with units based on the size of the dwellings, and the parts that is not part of the ‘private area’ forms a semi-public space where people can stay or just walk pass to the other rooms. These connections of in between spaces will from another system in the city, and I believe this system will change the way of development of housings too.
