Despite the rapid and often drastic transformations of Seoul’s urban fabric, Pimatgol has managed to preserve both its presence and everyday use, while Insadong, located at the heart of the city, has continuously evolved alongside Seoul’s broader changes. At the intersection of these two sites, this project explores ways to sustain historical continuity while simultaneously accommodating the alternative spatial needs of contemporary urban life. The project identifies semi-public space as a key strategy for achieving this balance. This project proposes a new type of alternative space that the city needs today. By examining how people have historically used these spaces, it reinterprets conventional ideas of commercial collective buildings while maintaining a strong sense of place. Through the creation of various forms of semi-public areas, the project seeks spatial solutions that bridge the past and the present.
