Depth of the Shadow is a performance that explores the concept of relation. Through the performance, audience members encounter one another and form new types of relationships, which in turn influence the unfolding of the performance itself. Two audience participants directly interact with the performance, becoming active agents rather than passive observers.
The project focuses on the idea of immersion and questions the role of technology in immersive performance. We experimented with new forms of relationships between performers, audiences, and technological systems. In particular, the work investigates how performers can exist and interact with audiences when the performance is grounded in a physical stage rather than a purely virtual environment.
The performance space mathematically connects two stages. By using precise numerical relationships, the abstract spatial structure becomes tangible and functional, allowing space itself to operate as an active tool within the performance.
Movement plays a central role in shaping relationships within the work. The shadow functions as a key element, taking on multiple roles throughout the performance—as a visual extension of the body, a mediator between participants, and a dynamic indicator of interaction.
The musical composition is generated through mathematical algorithms. The performance incorporates Molecular Music Box, developed by Tom Snively, which translates molecular structures into sound.
